How to Measure Your Windows for Curtains
Measuring your windows correctly is the first step to achieving perfectly fitted curtains. Before you begin, decide where your curtain rod will be installed, as curtain measurements are always taken from the rod—not just the window frame.
Step 1: Measure the Width
Measure the width of your window frame from one side to the other.
For the best appearance, allow the curtain rod to extend 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) beyond each side of the window. This creates the illusion of a larger window and allows the curtains to stack neatly away from the glass when opened.
For a full, luxurious look, choose curtain panels with a combined width that is 1.5–2.5 times the width of the curtain rod.
Example
If your curtain rod measures 72 inches wide, your total curtain fabric width should be approximately 108–180 inches.
Step 2: Measure the Length
Decide where the curtain rod will be mounted. A common recommendation is to position it 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) above the window frame, or closer to the ceiling to make the room appear taller.
Measure from the top of the curtain rod to your desired curtain length.
You can choose from the following styles:
- Sill Length: Ends at the windowsill.
- Apron Length: Ends about 4 inches (10 cm) below the windowsill.
- Floor Length: Ends about ½ inch (1 cm) above the floor.
- Puddle Length: Extends 2–8 inches (5–20 cm) onto the floor for a luxurious, elegant appearance.
Step 3: Choose the Right Curtain Size
Ready-made curtain panels are commonly available in standard lengths such as 63, 84, 96, 108, and 120 inches.
Select the curtain length that best matches your measurements. If your measurement falls between two sizes, choose the next longer size for the best fit.
